Part 2 A:Observe: In this picture I see a lot of bread and chicken for the armed forces in Selma, Alabama. Which tells me that there were a lot of people in the army at the time. Or, at least in Alabama.
The first thing I noticed about this picture was how the pan was actually overflowing with chicken.
There are no words in this picture.
Reflect: I think this image was made to show nonenlisted people how the armed forces were doing during the war.
I think the audience for this picture was anyone who was curious about how a family member or loved one was doing.
I think that what is missing from this picture is people. A picture doesn't show the real scenario if there aren't any people in it.
Questions: I wonder who took the picture and who made the food.
I wonder where this picture was taken.
I wonder why someone took this picture.

Observe: In this picture I see two women walking down a dirt road.
The first thing I noticed about this picture was how empty it looked, like there is nothing but grass and road stretched out in front of them.
The physical setting is an empty field on either side of an unpaved dirt road. The only trees are off in the distance, and there is a sparce fence to the left of the women.
Reflect: I think that this image might have been made to show the desolateness of certain parts of Alabama, and how far people had to walk sometimes.
I think this picture was made before cars became popular, because then the roads would probably be of better quality.
The audience of this picture was probably people from the North, so they could see how people were living in the South.
Questions: Where were the women walking to?
Why is there such a long stretch of land with nothing on it?
What were they walking such a long way to do?

: In this picture I see an entire family of African Americans looking into the distance on the porch of what seems to be their house.
The first thing I noticed about this picture was how big their house is. It looks bigger than I thought people would be able to afford at that time.
The physical setting is on a family's farm. I can see their growing field behind the house.
Reflect: What is happening in this picture is the family is looking out into the distance or maybe just relaxing.
What I think is missing from this image is them working. Because if this was an accurate depiction of the time, then they wouldn't all be sitting around staring ahead.
If this type of picture was made today, it would be in color, people would be wearing clothes of a better quality, and instead of being outside, they would probably be sitting on the couch watching TV.
Questions: What are they all looking at?
Why aren't they working?
Where is Greensboro are they, are they in the middle of nowhere or the middle of town?

Part 2 B:
Lunchroom near Belle Glade, Florida
Lunchroom near Belle Glade, Florida
Observe:
1) In this picture I see a restaurant with a sign on top saying that it serves white and colored people.
2)The first thing I noticed was the sign on top of the restaurant.
3)There is one person in this picture, and it is a white woman exiting the restaurant. The objects in the picture are a wooden bridge leading away from the restaurant, telephone poles in the distance, and garbage underneath the bridge.
Reflect:
1) I think this image was made to show that the racism in America was totally accepted and was just a part of everyday life.
2) Nothing much is physically happening in this picture, other than a woman exiting the restaurant.
3)I think that something that is missing from this picture is people inside of the restaurant. It would be cool to see the line of segregation in the restaurant.
Question:
1) Who is the woman exiting the restaurant?
2) What does the sign mean? Does it mean that white and colored people are allowed to coexist in the restaurant, or are they segregated?
3) When was this picture taken?
Street scene near bus station in Durham, North Carolina
Street scene near bus station in Durham, North Carolina
Observe:
1) In this picture I see a bathroom reserved for only white ladies, and a group of women walking towards it.
2) The first thing I noticed about this picture was sign on the bathroom door.
3) The physical setting of this picture is on a busy, idyllic street. It's sad that even on such a pretty street, something so ugly could be going on.
Reflect:
1) I think this image was made to show how itigrated into society racism was.
2) I think this picture was taken in the 1940's.
3) If someone made this picture today, it would be in color, there would be different type of car in the bottom right corner, the women would be wearing differnt things, and the door would probably say women instead of ladies.
Question:
1) Why is there a bathroom in the wall and not inside a store or something.
2) Where in the south was this taken?
3) What made people think that this level of discrimination is okay?
Sign on restaurant, Lancaster, Ohio
Sign on restaurant, Lancaster, Ohio
Observe:
1) There is nothing in this picture except a wrought iron sign hanging in a window that says we cater to white trade only.
2) There are no people in this picture, but there is a sign in a window.
3) The words that I see are, "we cater to white trade only."
Reflect:
1) Nothing is happening in this image, it is just a picture of a sign.
2) I think this picture was made in the 1930's or 40's.
3) The thing that is missing in this picture is people, there are no people inside of the restaurant. That makes me happy because maybe it means that in that area, maybe segregation was falling out of favor.
Question:
1) Why aren't there any people in the restaurant?
2) Where in the south was this picture taken?
3) Who made the decision to hang that sign?
